Ce travail s’est appuyé sur la liste des habitats marins initiée par Dirberg et Ferry suite à l’expédition Madibenthos organisée par le Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle (MNHN), en 2016, en Martinique. Des observations et vérifications ponctuelles, effectuées sur le terrain jusqu’en 2021 ont permis de consolider la typologie.\r\nLa structure hiérarchique des habitats repose sur la méthode normalisée de classification de l’Ifrecor qui a cependant été adaptée aux spécificités du territoire.
