Elle dispose de complexes récifaux importants (plus de 4.500km2 de récifs et 20.000km2 environ de zones lagonaires) avec une densité de population réduite (245.000 habitants). Les relations homme‐récif et les usages qui en sont faits sont contrastés entre les différentes cultures présentes. La plupart des institutions en charge de la gestion ou conservation de ces écosystèmes, sont de plus en plus sollicitées pour démontrer l'efficacité de leurs initiatives. A cet effet, les décideurs peuvent s’appuyer sur les analyses coût-bénéfice (ACB) d'un projet ou d’une politique. Bien que dans la pratique, tous les avantages et les coûts ne soient pas quantifiables, l’ACB fournit un outil utile pour aider à la prise de décision politique et pour la rendre plus rationnelle. L'identification claire des bénéficiaires et des perdants de mesures de gestion contribue à la réussite de sa mise en œuvre et au soutien des parties prenantes impliquées.\r\nDans ce rapport, nous passons en revue quinze études d’ACBs sur des projets de gestion des récifs coralliens et mangroves, afin d'évaluer la façon dont ils ont traité les questions méthodologiques, tant pour l'évaluation des services écosystémiques et le développement de scénarios, comme pour la robustesse de leurs résultats. Dans le même temps et dans la mesure du possible, ce rapport a fourni des orientations méthodologiques pour la mise en place d’ACB sur ces écosystèmes.\r\nLa plupart des études se sont concentrées sur l’analyse d’une même selection de services écosystémiques, à savoir la production de biomasse pour la pêche, la présence d’attributs pour le tourisme sous-marin et l’absorption de l’énergie de la houle pour la protection côtière.
