Les activités anthropiques développées sur les littoraux récifaux, endommagent les ressources dont elles tirent profit. Cette situation alarmante nécessite de mettre en place et d’appliquer des politiques de gestion adaptées pour tendre vers un développement durable. L’objectif requis afin de réussir une telle entreprise est l’approfondissement et l’intégration de la connaissance du système littoral dans son fonctionnement socio-économique. Il s’agit de comprendre comment les hommes en relation avec l’espace naturel, construisent et consomment des espaces économiques et sociaux à travers les flux échangés. Pour mener à bien cette recherche, des outils méthodologiques développés en économie de l’environnement sont utilisés, auxquels sera associée toute une réflexion géographique. Le littoral récifal réunionnais représente un terrain tout à fait approprié pour une telle étude, de par les caractéristiques de ses constructions récifales et les pressions multiples et croissantes dont elles font l’objet. Il s’agit d’un secteur fondamental pour l’île dans la mesure où l’anse constitue le seul site naturel permettant une approche aisée et un accostage aux bateaux d’une certaine taille. Le but est de concevoir un aménagement intégré de la zone qui puisse associer la réalisation d’un abri portuaire (de type petite marina permettant un abri et un accostage facilité aux petites embarcations de pêche ou de plaisance fréquentant le site) et la conception d’un programme de confortation du rivage, puisque des traces d’une érosion assez significative peuvent être observées à proximité immédiate du wharf et au pied des habitations bordant la côte. Second objectif du programme ciblé sur l’île de Futuna pour l’année 2005, une expertise sera réalisée par le LGPMC de l’UNC sur le secteur littoral de Vele. Cette zone doit faire l’objet d’aménagements littoraux significatifs liés au programme d’extension de la piste de l’aéroport. L'extraction terminée, généralement au plus près des besoins en matériaux, le site était abandonné. Ces anciennes zones d'extraction de matériaux coralliens sont toujours présentes avec les dégradations qu'elles continuent de provoquer dans le voisinage avec la remise en suspension des fines qui empêchent et gênent la recolonisation et la croissance des coraux. Sans compter l'aspect inesthétique de ces zones dans une île ou le tourisme est une activité essentielle. C'est ainsi que 18 \"chancres\" frangeants existent toujours sur les 73 kilomètres de rivages bordant le lagon.\r\nCommandée par IFRECOR-Polynésie en vue d'une réhabilitation-restauration de quelques-uns de ces sites, une étude plus précise de plans de restauration a été réalisée dans deux sites sélectionnés pour diverses raisons.
