Ainsi en 1999, un colloque international a-t-il été organisé sous l’égide de l’Etat, du Département et de la Région sur la GIZC, thème qui a conduit depuis à des réflexions approfondies du Comité local de l’IFRECOR et du Conseil Economique et Social de la Réunion. Un SMVM est en cours d’application dans le cadre du Schéma d’Aménagement Régional depuis 1995 et en 2005 une réserve naturelle englobant l’essentiel de l’écosystème récifal de l’île devrait être instaurée.
