Jusqu’en 2001 et à raison de deux semaines de terrain par an ce seront près de 3 800 tortues qui seront baguées.\r\nLes données collectées sur le terrain révèlent assez vite que le lagon calédonien n’est pas seulement un site d’alimentation dans lequel évoluent quatre espèces de tortues marines toute l’année, c’est également une région du Pacifique ayant une activité de ponte régulière et abondante.\r\nFort de ce constat l’ASNNC décide de lancer, grâce aux financements émanant en grande partie des trois Provinces, un programme d’étude des tortues marines sur l’ensemble du Territoire. Celui-ci a été réalisé sur deux périodes consécutives (mai 2002/ août 2003 et septembre 2003/mai 2004) et les résultats obtenus montrent que la Nouvelle-Calédonie est non seulement un site ayant un important rôle à jouer en termes de conservation de ces espèces (en voie de disparition) mais également un des rares endroits du monde où leur pêche est encore autorisée. Mayotte, collectivité départementale française, est l’île la plus orientale de cet archipel. Elle abrite un complexe récifo-lagonaire de 1500 km2, véritable réservoir de biodiversité. Ce complexe intègre des récifs frangeants et barrières parsemés de communautés à phanérogames marines. Cet écosystème, véritable pilier du récif par ses fonctions dans le maintien des équilibres biologiques et physiques du littoral, est soumis à de fortes pressions naturelles et anthropiques. L’objectif de cette étude était de caractériser, quantifier et spatialiser les communautés d’herbiers au sein du récif frangeant et barrière. Cette étude a permis de mettre en évidence une surface de 760 hectares d’herbiers à Mayotte. Ces zones d’herbiers présentent un taux de recouvrement faible et une morphologie discontinue. Cependant la biodiversité des phanérogames marines est remarquable. L’association de la télédétection, des Systèmes d’Information Géographique et des méthodes de quantification écologique a permis de rendre compte de l’état des lieux de cet écosystème sur Mayotte, site privilégié pour l’alimentation et la reproduction des tortues marines. Cette première étude met en évidence l’influence de la qualité de l’eau et des conditions hydrodynamiques sur l’écosystème des herbiers marins. La visualisation des résultats fait part de l’état d’avancement de l’urbanisation sur la côte Nord Est de la Grande Terre de Mayotte et de ses impacts sur cet écosystème fragile.
