Cette activité est apparue dans les années 1970 mais ne s’est réellement développée qu’à partir de la seconde moitié des années 1980. En 2002, La Réunion a accueilli 426 000 touristes ce qui en fait le second pôle touristique de la zone, derrière l’île Maurice et la cinquième destination lointaine des français.\r\nSes paysages remarquables -volcan, cirques, zones récifales- sont les atouts majeurs de La Réunion qui sont vantés dans le slogan « la Réunion, île intense » devenu le fer de lance de la promotion touristique, engagée il y a quelques années par les instances locales. L’attractivité touristique de l’île présente comme principale caractéristique d’être duale : d’un côté un tourisme vert, et de l’autre un tourisme bleu.\r\nPar ailleurs, au tourisme international, s’ajoute également un tourisme local et des activités de loisir, lesquels sont également «consommateurs» d’espaces naturels et par conséquent participent à la touristification de La Réunion.\r\nDans ce « paysage » touristique pluriel, quel est le véritable rôle du littoral et plus précisément des récifs coralliens dans les processus de mise en tourisme de l’île ? Ce questionnement prend tout son sens lorsque l’on sait que l’île ne comporte que 25 km de barrière corallienne (sur les 210 km de linéaire côtier), formant une ceinture discontinue localisée dans l’ouest et le sud de l’île. Après avoir mis en place le Plan d’Aménagement Général et le Plan de Gestion de l’Espace Maritime, ils espèrent obtenir grâce à leurs efforts, l’écolabel environnemental décerné aux communes du littoral et aux ports de plaisance : le Pavillon Bleu d’Europe. L’objectif de cette étude fut de réaliser un document destiné à guider les élus dans leur démarche et à faire un état des lieux sur la situation actuelle. Il s’avère que l’île de Moorea présente de nombreux attraits touristiques, naturels et culturels, et que de véritables améliorations ont été constatées au niveau de la gestion environnementale. Néanmoins, si la commune se portait candidate au terme de cette année, de grosses lacunes concernant le domaine de l’assainissement ne lui permettrait pas d’obtenir cette labellisation.
