Mayotte, collectivité départementale française, est l’île la plus orientale de cet archipel. Elle abrite un complexe récifo-lagonaire de 1500 km2, véritable réservoir de biodiversité. Ce complexe intègre des récifs frangeants et barrières parsemés de communautés à phanérogames marines. Cet écosystème, véritable pilier du récif par ses fonctions dans le maintien des équilibres biologiques et physiques du littoral, est soumis à de fortes pressions naturelles et anthropiques. L’objectif de cette étude était de caractériser, quantifier et spatialiser les communautés d’herbiers au sein du récif frangeant et barrière. Cette étude a permis de mettre en évidence une surface de 760 hectares d’herbiers à Mayotte. Ces zones d’herbiers présentent un taux de recouvrement faible et une morphologie discontinue. Cependant la biodiversité des phanérogames marines est remarquable. L’association de la télédétection, des Systèmes d’Information Géographique et des méthodes de quantification écologique a permis de rendre compte de l’état des lieux de cet écosystème sur Mayotte, site privilégié pour l’alimentation et la reproduction des tortues marines. Cette première étude met en évidence l’influence de la qualité de l’eau et des conditions hydrodynamiques sur l’écosystème des herbiers marins. La visualisation des résultats fait part de l’état d’avancement de l’urbanisation sur la côte Nord Est de la Grande Terre de Mayotte et de ses impacts sur cet écosystème fragile. En 1997, un autre suivi s’est déroulé du 1er au 8 mai, réalisé conjointement par l’ARVAM, l’IFREMER, OCEA et l’Université de la Réunion, afin de compléter la description des peuplements et de comparer les données obtenues (Tessier et al., 1997). En 1999, dans le cadre du programme CORDIO sur le blanchissement corallien et ses impacts écologiques et socio-économiques, des stations de surveillance ont été implantées et sont parties intégrantes de l’ORC. Dédié aux acteurs locaux de la gestion, ce travail se limite aux problématiques locales et ne prend pas en compte les enjeux plus globaux ou régionaux comme les changements climatiques ; problématique traitée par ailleurs dans d’autres documents tels que le rapport du WWF et du WDCS (Elliott et al., 2007). Dans cette optique, une première campagne d’observation des baleines à bosse par voie aérienne a été engagée lors de la saison 2006 (Wickel, 2006).
